Hydro-Québec Net Metering: How Does It Work?
Hydro-Québec's net metering program is a key element in making your solar installation profitable. It allows you to sell your surplus solar energy back to the grid and receive credits on your electricity bill.
How does net metering work?
During the day: your panels produce
During sunlight hours, your solar panels produce electricity. If your production exceeds your consumption, the surplus is sent to the Hydro-Québec grid.
In the evening: you consume from the grid
In the evening or during cloudy weather, you consume electricity normally from the grid. But the credits accumulated during the day offset this consumption.
On your bill: the difference
Hydro-Québec calculates the difference between what you produced and consumed. If you have a net surplus, it is carried forward as a credit on the following months (up to 24 months).
The bidirectional meter
Hydro-Québec installs a bidirectional meter free of charge that measures energy in both directions: the energy you consume from the grid AND the energy you send back to the grid. This meter enables the credit calculation.
